National Theatre Classics and Drama Trip Report
BackOn 15th October 2025, our Classics and Drama Year 13 students had the opportunity to see the National Theatre’s production of The Bacchae at the Olivier Theatre — a bold, modern interpretation of Euripides’ Greek tragedy, directed by Indhu Rubasingham.
The performance explored themes of power, identity, and rebellion through stunning visual design. One moment that stood out to the students was when King Pentheus opened a wardrobe glowing with golden light — a striking symbol of transformation and the power. Later, shimmering mirror balls cast golden reflections across the theatre, creating a lively, immersive atmosphere that captivated the audience.
Students were particularly impressed by how lighting and projections were used to enhance the drama and connect this ancient story to modern audiences. The production was praised by the students for its creativity, symbolism, and the way it reimagined a timeless tale for today’s world. It was a lovely way to end Term 1 with a cross curricular visit to the National Theatre.
