KS3 - Music

Aims

All students will:

  • Perform, listen to and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres and styles

  • Learn to sing and play musical instruments through creating and composing music individually and as  part of an ensemble

  • Widen their experience and knowledge with the use of music technology

  • Understand and explore how music is created using the musical elements and different notation

  • Develop independence, communication and life-long skills through practical music making and discussion

Subject Content

Students will be taught to:

  • Play and perform confidently in a range of solo and ensemble contexts with focus on fluency, accuracy and expression
  • Compose, improvise and develop musical ideas by exploring a range of musical styles and genres
  • Identify and understand key musical features under the fundamental musical elements
  • Use a variety of musical notations
  • Analyse a wide range of music developing a deeper understanding of the context, style and history

Music Lessons

SLGGS is fortunate to have a large team of visiting Music Teachers who teach throughout the school week.  A large percentage of students have music lesson either at school or elsewhere and we actively support them in these.  Further details and appropriate forms can be found under the information menu on the school website.

Extra-curricular Activities

As a department we offer a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities for those students who want to develop their musical skills and abilities beyond a classroom curriculum. Students are encouraged to take part in our extensive and ever-growing collection of musical ensembles which include: KS3 string Quartet, Guitar Club, KS3 choir, Year 7 orchestra, Ukulele Club, Flute Group, Sax Ensemble, Music Technology Club, KS3 Chamber Choir, Full Orchestra, Brassies, Musical Choir.
