Work Experience

“In an era when basic skills and competencies play an ever more vital part in the battle to remain competitive in the global economy, work experience offers an outstanding opportunity to help young people understand why these matter and to gain a taste of using them in the real world.”

 Richard Lambert, General Director CBI

We take our contribution to workforce development seriously, and benefit enormously from the diverse range of trainees and professionals who undertake work experience here.

We are committed to providing a valuable experience to all those undertaking a work placement with us. Our outstanding, businesslike learning environment is an ideal place to learn new skills, and our supportive, competent staff ensure that the benefits of the placement can be maximised.

Due to the high level of demand for work placements, we regrettably are not able to accommodate all requests. Please see the list of placement types below.

School Direct

Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School are the lead school for a cohort of schools in Canterbury who are working together to offer places on the School Direct Training Programme for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Apprentices

We currently employ 5 apprentices in Administration, ICT, Careers, Catering and Learning Support. We are committed to the principles and values of the apprenticeship scheme and intend to continue to train apprentices in the future.

We advertise for apprentices on our website and in the local press.

PGCE placements:

We train approximately 7 PGCE student teachers each placement. Primarily, our student teachers come from Canterbury Christ Church. However, we do take pupils from iteach and other recognised programmes. If you have been accepted onto a PGCE course such as iteach, and would like to enquire about a placement, please email Katharine Wood, our Professional Mentor: kwood@langton.kent.sch.uk Please note, the Professional mentor will not be able to arrange pre-PGCE work placements.

GTP second placements:

We are able to offer GTP second placements to a number of student teachers every year. If you are interested in arranging a second placement, please have your EBT email Mrs J Thurgood outlining the subject and preferred time frame for the placement.  jthurgood@langton.kent.sch.uk

Pre-PGCE placements:

If you are considering undertaking teacher training in the near future, and need to gain some experience in a school, we recommend the following routs:

The Teaching Agency runs a programme called ‘School Experience Programme’ which will give you a taster of a school and allow you to meet with teachers and senior staff. We are happy to take School Experience Programme participants, but you will need to apply through The Teaching Agency. Teaching Agency Website

We do take a small number of pre-PGCE placements outside of these programmes. However, you will appreciate that we have limited capacity, and cannot meet every request.

Training school status has enabled our school to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom by harnessing local expertise and maximising CPD and pupil voice.

Child protection:

We have a duty to keep our pupils safe, and therefore must insist that anyone undertaking a work placement has a valid CRB.
