More than 90 Per Cent of A Level Students Secure University Places

Date posted:Thursday 18th August 2011

More than 90% of all students who sat A Level exams at Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School in Canterbury this year have secured places at University on the strength of their results and have achieved their offers before Clearing whilst all 30 students who also undertook the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) passed with 12 students achieving A*.

Deputy Headteacher, Mr Isaac Taylor, said: “I am delighted that the vast majority of our students achieved their offers and did so exceptionally well. It is a testament to their hard work and fearless determination. All of our students, regardless of their ability or aspirations, have made well informed choices about their futures, and will no doubt become the inspirational and visionary leaders of tomorrow.”

Amongst the 12 students who achieved straight A/A* passes were:
  • Sophie McManus who secured an A* in French together with 2 As in Biology and Chemistry and who has secured a place to study Biomedical Sciences at Oxford
  • Hannah McDonald who notched up 3 A* in Fine Art, Mathematics and Psychology together with an A in Further Mathematics. Hannah will be taking up a place to study Fine Art (Painting & Printmaking) at the Glasgow School of Art
  • Genevieve Ellison-Smith who achieved 3 A* in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and will be heading off to Bristol University to study Psychology and Zoology.

The school was delighted by the achievement of the girls who completed the EPQ, equivalent to one half of an A Level. Mr Taylor said: “We are very proud that so many more students undertook the EPQ than last year and that they have all passed. The EPQ is a highly demanding piece of work involving independent research and presentation far beyond the normal demand of A Level.”

A total of 310 A Level exams were sat by 104 students with 12 girls achieving straight A/A* passes and more than half of all students achieving A*-B. For the third year running, 99% of all exams taken by SLGGS students were passed.

The 12 students who achieved straight A passes are: Eleanor Campbell, Abigail Coker, Cordelia Edwards, Genevieve Ellison-Smith, Sadia Hoque, Anna Jaanus, Catriona McConkey, Holly McCulloch, Hannah McDonald, Sophie McManus, Amalia Neenan and Lauren Young
