Asian Spectacular Day at SLGGS

Date posted:Monday 18th July 2011
Year 8 students picked up a true taste of India during an ‘Asian Spectacular Day’ at SLGGS on Wed 13 July.
More than 160 students enjoyed five different workshops throughout the day including Bollywood dance, henna hand painting, sari wrapping and Indian drumming.
Mr Brady, Head of Design & Technology at the school, ran a block printing workshop. Students designed and made a block, which was then inked and printed onto hessian fabric. Mr Brady said: “Indian block printing is an important source of income throughout India, which families sell through co-operatives. The girls really appreciated the hard work that goes into producing beautiful textiles; they really enjoyed the whole experience.”
Authentic Indian cooking was also very popular with the students, as they were treated to a demonstration by Raj a professional chef, from the Prince of India Restaurant in Faversham. Raj kindly offered his time to the School at no cost and was a great success, explaining the preparation needed to make chicken korma and two side dishes which the students could then taste. They also also learned about the sensory properties and health benefits of different spices.
Head of Food Technology, Nicky Nunns said “As a regular customer of the Prince of India and having attended two cookery courses at the restaurant I know what an excellent instructor Raj is how good the food is. Raj and Jack were only too willing to give their time freely. The pupils have really benefitted from workshop which brought Indian cooking to life. They have not only enjoyed tasting the food but also helping to prepare and cook it.”
Headteacher, Mrs Robinson, said: “I was highly impressed with the girls’ involvement in this multi-cultural experience. They gained a great deal of valuable insight into different cultural activities and had great fun at the same time.”
