Year 7 Student - Sports News
Year 7 student Qi'-Chi Ukpai excels at athletics specifically the high jump, and is a member of Invicta East Kent Athletic Club in Canterbury. In September she started off her school year at SLGGS by winning Gold at the Kent U13 girls high Jump competition. The following January she achieved gold in the U13 girls high Jump and long jump at the South of England Indoor Championships.
Qi’-Chi’s long jump distance of 4.74m was a championship best ever performance, with her high jump of 1.51m putting her at the top of the UK U13 rankings. A fantastic achievement!
The success continued with a win at the U13 high jump at the London Indoor Games at the end of January setting a new personal best with a jump of 1.52m.
Last weekend at the U13/U15 Indoor Open at Lee Valley she improved her high jump PB to 1.54m and came 2nd overall on countback (she jumped exactly the same height as the winner!) competing mainly against the older U15 athletes. Qi’-Chi is now just 1cm away from Debbie Marti's high Jump UK age record (1.55m for girls aged 11yrs old) which was set on 10th May 1980, almost 40 years ago. Debbie Marti went on to represent the UK at the Barcelona Olympic games as well as several other international events at High Jump. At present Qi’-Chi's 1.54m jump is the 2nd highest EVER for an 11 year old girl in the UK, she hopes to beat or equal the 1.55m mark by the time she is 12 in May this year. She continues to be ranked #1 in the UK for U13 girls for high jump and is now 3rd overall for the long jump.
The PE Department and all at SLGGS are very proud of Qi’-Chi and look forward to hearing about all of her future achievements. A very well done!
